Mutawintji NP
Mutawintji NP lies in the middle of the outback and there are no sealed roads to get there. We are a little bit concerned about our car but decide to give it a try. 15 Minutes after leaving Broken Hill we loose radio reception, and some 50 km later there is only sandy desert all around us. The only sign of civilization is a sign, that reminds us to turn our clocks 30 minutes forward as we have reached a new time zone.
Another 2 hours later we finally reach Mutawintji NP. The information board at the visitor center recommends two walks, which we decide to do. The ranger reminds us to be careful not to step on any snakes, but fortunately we haven't seen any of them. The views the Bynguano Range Trail provides are breathtaking.

The sun is burning and we couldn't imagine to do this walk during the hot summer months. To get back to our car we had to walk through a narrow canyon and use some rope to get down a steep slope.

White Cliffs
150 km and 3 hours of driving and we arrive in White Cliffs, NSW's second largest opal center. We use the remaining hours
before dusk to have a look around.
We visit the main mine field, which reminds me of a meadow with thousands of molehills, only all of them are white. And finally, before we go to bed, we have some beer and a chat with the locals in the pub.
A guy called Jogg invites us to visit his mine. Since had no success in finding any opals he decided to show tourists like us the mines and tell them about the history of this town. It's getting really hot in summer and once the mines are large enough, many diggers decide to live down there. Jogg also told us, that they got telephone, TV and electricity only 7 years ago.
- The whole town has so many tunnels - it could be a Swiss cheese. -
